Managing Your Energy as an Entrepreneur with Perimenopause: How to Stay Focused and Thriving in Business
When you hit your 40s or 50s, something shifts. Your body, your hormones, and – if you’re an entrepreneur like me – your energy.
I’ve been running my business for almost nine years, and in that time, I’ve experienced everything from newborn night feeds to perimenopausal sleepless nights. And let me tell you: they both mess with your energy in very different ways.
These days, I can still get into a deep flow of focus and creativity, but it doesn’t last as long as it used to. My energy feels more cyclical, more unpredictable. So, I’ve had to find ways to manage it – to keep my business (and myself) thriving without exhausting myself.
Managing energy during perimenopause is hard, and the days of doing a 5am start are loooooooooooong gone, unless it’s caused by sleepless nights, anxiety or night sweats (ick, they are the worst!!!).
Here’s what’s worked for me.
1. Meditation (My Midday Reboot)
I find that protein really helps me to stay on track, otherwise I I hit that afternoon slump.
But, instead of powering through, I pause.
Even a five-minute meditation can completely shift my energy. I love using Gabrielle Bernstein’s meditations or quick guided tracks from Reiki Rachael. They help me calm my mind, reconnect to my intuition, and reset my focus.
If you’re struggling with low energy or brain fog, try adding short meditation breaks to your day. You’ll be amazed how much more productive (and peaceful) you feel afterward.
I love a little MCT oil to help me too!
2. Breathwork for Focus and Flow
When I need a quick lift, I’ll do a simple breathing exercise:
-
Inhale for four
-
Hold for four
-
Exhale for four
This “box breathing” helps clear stale, stuck energy and brings in fresh oxygen to recharge my body and mind. It’s such a simple, free tool – but it works wonders when you feel sluggish.
I love Reiki Rachel to allow myself to listen to my inner voice and feel calmer.
3. Rethinking Meals and Managing Your Energy during Perimenopause
I’ve learned that food timing massively affects my focus.
If I eat lunch too early, I fall into an afternoon food coma and lose my momentum completely. So I hold off eating until later in the day – giving myself a solid block of productive morning hours when I’m most alert and creative.
I’ll then have protein, and have switched to eggs and avocado for breakfast that I used to HATE, and now it really helps!
Find the rhythm that works for you. For some women it’s fasting, for others it’s small protein snacks – the key is to tune in and experiment.
4. Supporting Your Brain and Body
I’m not a health expert, but I’ve found a few supplements that genuinely help.
I’m on HRT, and it’s taken a while to find the right combination for me.
I love Davina Taylor’s Willpowders – especially the collagen and MCT oil. The MCT oil supports brain function and focus, while collagen helps me feel stronger overall.
Followed by some Creatine and some Lion’s Mane.
And no, this isn’t sponsored – just something that’s really helped me personally.
5. Movement (Even a Mini Boogie Counts!)
If I’m flagging, I’ll get up, stretch, or dance around my office for a few minutes. It sounds silly, but a little movement completely resets my mood.
I go for a run every morning. I call it my granny run around Highgrove House gardens (although I’ve never seen the King).
And I’ll do a weights workout with Joe Wicks several times a week.
The key is to listen to your body – when your energy dips, move it.
6. Work in Focused Windows
I’ve fallen in love with the Pomodoro method – working in 45-minute bursts followed by short breaks.
It keeps me accountable and stops me from drifting off into procrastination land. When you know the timer’s running, you tend to get more done. And at the end of each block, you feel that lovely little hit of accomplishment.
🌙 Final Thoughts
Perimenopause is a big life shift, but it doesn’t have to derail your focus or business.
You might not have the same kind of energy you did in your 20s – but you have something far more powerful: wisdom, intuition, and self-awareness.
By learning to manage your energy — instead of fighting it — you can create a way of working that feels balanced, feminine, and fully aligned with who you are now.
