How to Build a Business as a Single Mum (Without Burning Out)

People call it freedom – but if you’re a single mum running a business, you know it can feel like the most exhausting juggle imaginable.

School runs. Client work. Bills. Emotional load. And that constant pressure of knowing you are the one who has to make the money each month.

I know this life intimately.

Before becoming a mum, I was an international TV journalist working long, dangerous, all-consuming hours. When I had my son, I knew that life no longer fit – but building a business brought its own challenges, guilt, and burnout.

The Guilt No One Talks About

As mums, we’re pulled in two directions: ambition and presence. Wanting to work and wanting to be there for our children. That guilt can be overwhelming – especially as a single parent.

What saved me wasn’t working harder. It was working differently.

Why Passive Income Changes Everything

Passive income isn’t about sipping cocktails on a beach. For single mums, real financial freedom looks like:

  • Picking your child up from school

  • Being home during holidays

  • Taking time off when they’re ill

  • Earning even when you can’t show up fully

That’s the freedom that matters.

Forget “Balance” – Try Boundaries

I hate the word balance. We’re not a pair scales and trying to achieve perfection. It sets us up to fail.

Instead, I hyper-focus:

  • Focused work blocks

  • Clear stop times

  • Being fully present with my son when he’s home

This approach is kinder, more effective, and far more sustainable.

Build Systems That Support You

You don’t need to do everything yourself.

  • Hire help where it removes stress (start with a cleaner, and then hire a VA for specific tasks)

  • Automate your sales

  • Create products that sell without constant effort

This is how your business starts supporting you.

Building a Business That Fits around my son

I didn’t build a business to live the jet set life, I built it to be there for my son and to ensure that I can take him to therapy sessions and care for him.

That means focusing on passive income that works when I can’t:

  • Recurring income

  • Courses and memberships

  • Simple funnels

  • Content that works long-term

That’s what allowed me to create stability without being constantly working, so I can still make money while I’m being a mum.

A Slower Path Still Gets You There

If you’re building during nap times, Lego sessions, or evenings – you’re not behind. You’re building something aligned.

Progress doesn’t need to be perfect.
It just needs to be consistent.
