Why I Quit My 9-5 Job to Build a Freedom-Based Business (and Never Looked Back)
There wasn’t one dramatic moment where I slammed my laptop shut, handed in my notice, and walked out of an office for the last time.
It was quieter than that.
A slow, persistent feeling that the life I was living didn’t quite fit anymore.
I quit a 20-year journalism career that looked impressive on paper.
But “impressive” doesn’t factor when it comes to time with my son or my health, or freedom.
I didn’t want a life run by politicians deadlines, crises, and crazy travel schedules.
I wanted work that fits my life as a single parent juggling a son with special needs – and I didn’t want to compromise
So I walked away and built something on my own terms that fits my life.
I didn’t want a “successful” career if it came at the cost of my freedom.
So I quit my international journalism career – not to escape work, but to build a business that fit my life.
And I’ve never looked back.
The Real Reason I Left My 9-5
I didn’t leave because I hated working. I just couldn’t work anymore with my son who is autistic (and I needed to travel – A LOT!!!) and then I had incontinence issues.
But I also left because I hated feeling trapped.
Trapped by:
-
Fixed hours
-
Someone else deciding my time
-
The constant pressure to fit my life around work
I wanted flexibility.
I wanted autonomy.
And most of all, I wanted to be present – for my son, for my health, and for myself.
At the time, I didn’t have a perfect plan.
I just knew I wanted a business that worked around my life, not the other way round.
What “Freedom” Actually Means (Beyond the Instagram Version)
When people hear “freedom-based business”, they often imagine laptops on beaches and passive income rolling in overnight.
The reality is more grounded – and far more meaningful.
For me, freedom means:
-
Choosing when I work
-
Designing my days around my energy
-
Being able to slow down when life demands it
-
Earning in ways that don’t rely on constant hustle
It’s not about doing nothing.
It’s about choice.
And once you’ve tasted that kind of freedom, it’s very hard to go back.
The Fear No One Talks About
Leaving a steady job brings up fear – especially as a single parent – even when you want more freedom.
Fear of:
-
Losing security
-
Not earning enough
-
Judgement from others
-
Getting it “wrong”
I felt all of it.
But what kept nudging me forward was this question:
“What if I don’t try – and I’m still here in ten years, wondering?”
That fear felt heavier than the fear of taking the leap.
Building a Business That Fits Real Life
I didn’t build a business around hustle culture.
I built it around:
-
Recurring income
-
Courses and memberships
-
Simple funnels
-
Content that works long-term
That’s what allowed me to create stability without being constantly “on”.
Freedom doesn’t come from working harder.
It comes from building smarter.
And that’s the part I wish more people talked about.
Why I’ve Never Looked Back
Have there been hard moments?
Of course.
But I’ve never once wished I’d stayed in a job that controlled my time.
Because now:
-
My business supports my life
-
My income isn’t tied to hours worked
-
I get to grow at my own pace
-
I choose how much space and rest I need
That kind of freedom is priceless.
If You’re Quietly Dreaming of More Freedom…
If you’re sitting in a job that feels safe but suffocating…
If you crave flexibility, autonomy, or a different way of working…
If you’re wondering whether it’s “too late” or “too risky”…
Let this be your reminder:
There is another way.
And you don’t have to burn everything down to start building it.
