Many PR go unread and are simply deleted. In my 20 years working in journalism, I rarely build a story around it.

PR must be better thought as a fact sheet, as the basis, and starting point to target a journalist.

Don’t just send out 40 PRs, and think your job is done.

Target individual media organisations, and journalists, rather than hoping for coverage from a PR.

A well-written email “pitch” personally written to the journalist impacts more, and especially if it targets and aims the specific media program.

Issuing a press release doesn’t mean the media will automatically run with it. Media outlets will ask the same questions they always do: Does it interest their readers?

Does it benefit the community in some way?

You should also consider other outlets that might pick up your press release.

Public relations professionals often follow a standard professional format for press releases.

Additional communication methods that journalists employ include pitch letters and media advisories. 

Although using a press release can save a company time and money, it constrains the format and style of distributed media. 

In the digital age, consumers want to get their information instantly which puts pressure on the news media to output as much material as possible.
